Specifically, the Terminator in the initial film, and in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, is a Model 101. It is characterized by its metal endoskeleton covered by living tissue, designed to blend in with humans. Its primary mission is typically assassination, often targeting key figures in the future war against machines led by John Connor.

In Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Terminator is reprogrammed by the future John Connor and sent back to protect a younger John Connor from a more advanced Terminator model.
